Nags Head Cottage — oceanfront view from the beach

Historic Nags Head Cottage Rental

Oceanfront · Nags Head, North Carolina · Family-owned since 1910

About the Cottage

For more than a century, this cottage has belonged to our family. It has weathered storms, hosted generations of summers, and quietly collected the memories, stories, and traditions that tie our family together.

This is not a typical vacation rental. The cottage is basic and rustic by design, a deliberate reflection of a simpler era at the beach that has all but disappeared. There is no air conditioning and few modern conveniences, just salt air, well-worn floors, and the kind of quiet that comes from a place built long before anyone thought to add either.

It is a special place to us, and we are looking forward to sharing it with a few special people who will appreciate it for exactly what it is.

Important: No Air Conditioning

This cottage does not have air conditioning. It is cooled by ocean breezes, ceiling fans, and open windows. Summers on the Outer Banks can be warm and humid. This cottage is best suited for guests who understand and genuinely appreciate an older, classic beach cottage experience. Please read this carefully before submitting a request.

Our History

Built in 1910, the "White House" cottage is part of the Nags Head Beach Cottages Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It belongs to a tradition local writer Jonathan Daniels named the “Unpainted Aristocracy” in the 1920s, a string of weathered cedar shake cottages built for function over form, their unpainted wood and sloped roofs shaped by more than a century of nor’easters and hurricanes.

These cottages were never meant to be fancy. Wide porches catch the ocean breeze, narrow rooms and propped open shutters keep air moving through, and there’s no air conditioning because there never needed to be. Sand on the floor, salt in the air, and generations of the same families returning summer after summer are part of the deal.

Our cottage has weathered storms, hosted reunions, and held a century’s worth of family history. Staying here means staying somewhere real, a place that has earned its character honestly, that asks you to slow down, and that connects you to a stretch of coastline and a way of life that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
